Protesters rally at U.S. embassy in Madrid over Venezuela intervention
Demonstrators carried Latin American flags and chanted slogans defending the nation’s sovereignty.
Traditional Andean pan flute music set the tone for the rally. Alberto Calderon, a member of a Peruvian music ensemble and descendant of migrants, led the performance, connecting melodies from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and parts of Argentina and Chile to Venezuela’s current crisis.
“Venezuela, an immortal nation,” the crowd chanted. “For your resistance, the peoples of the world stand with you.” Araceli Munoz Rojas said she attended to oppose U.S. military action, calling it a violation of international law. Miguel Sanchez, a dual Spanish-Argentine citizen, cautioned that foreign intervention could create a dangerous precedent across the region.
As the demonstration ended, participants emphasized solidarity and remembrance of past interventions in Latin America. “Even if time passes, I can’t forget you, it’s impossible,” they sang.
The rally followed Saturday’s U.S. military operation in Venezuela, which resulted in the capture and removal of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The strikes have sparked global criticism, with many nations calling for a coordinated international response.
