Strong Earthquake Strikes Off Central Chile Coast—USGS

(MENAFN) A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck offshore near central Chile on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), shaking parts of the region but causing no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

The quake occurred at 21:34 GMT and was centered approximately 33 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of the port city of Valparaíso, one of Chile’s key coastal hubs. The USGS said the seismic event originated at a depth of about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles), which is considered a moderately deep earthquake capable of being widely felt but often less destructive at the surface compared to shallower quakes.

Residents in Valparaíso and surrounding coastal areas reported brief but noticeable shaking, prompting some to temporarily leave buildings as a precaution. However, local authorities and early monitoring systems did not indicate any immediate structural damage or injuries in the aftermath.

Chile, which sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, regularly experiencing seismic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates.

While Sunday’s quake was moderate in magnitude, such events are common in the region and are closely monitored by national and international seismic agencies.

Authorities are expected to continue assessing the situation, but initial findings suggest the earthquake passed without serious impact on infrastructure or public safety.
